A Brewton man has entered a not-guilty plea on charges filed against him after a grand jury indictment last month.
Campbell appeared before a judge on Thursday at which time he entered a not guilty plea on charges of forgery and theft as well as ethics violations. His plea also included a waiver of arraignment. Judge Jeff White has recused himself from hearing the case. A new judge will be named to hear the case by the state.
Campbell faces seven counts of possession of a forged instrument; one count of third-degree theft of property and one count of ethics violation for using his position for personal gain.
“The charges stem from a criminal investigation into the handling of money that was collected during sporting events that took place for the school year of 2019-2020,” according to the arrest report from Escambia County Sheriff Heath Jackson.
Campbell had been an assistant principal, coach and teacher at W.S. Neal High School in East Brewton before being named as the head baseball coach for Flomaton High School for the 2020-2021 school year. He was tapped to teach physical education and driver’s education at the school as well, according to reports.
Campbell turned himself into the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office following the indictment and was released on a $25,000 bond, according to records.
Court records also indicate that Campbell’s attorney, Earnest Ray White, has filed for a request for discovery from the 21st Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
“When discoverable items are read, the (district attorney) will notify defense council and said discovery will be made available to defense counsel for the inspection,” court records noted.
Unless a settlement agreement is made, a trial in the case will be held in the future, officials said.
