Local folk artist Bernice Sims is living on through her work and Escambia County Habitat for Humanity is pleased to offer reprints of her work for area residents.
Shae Hines, executive director for the ECHFH, said the print is now being offered for those who appreciate Ms. Sims’ work and are looking for a way to support Habitat and their work in Escambia County.
“The painting was commissioned in 1996,” Hines said. “At the time, the organization was known as the Greater Brewton Area Habitat for Humanity. We have since changed our name and now reflect our support for the entire county, not just Brewton area residents.”
Hines said the painting shows workers engaged in building a home for someone in need. That work is continuing through the efforts and support of the communities Habitat serves.
“With this reprint, people have the opportunity to have a great piece of folk art done by a local artist,” Hines said. “We are offering these high-quality, heavy reprints for a donation of $50 each. The piece is very well done and is suitable for framing.”
Hines said the proceeds from the art fundraiser will be used to help fund the next project of the organization.
“We are beginning the selection process for our next partner family,” Hines said. “We won’t know the exact location of the project until that selection is made. We are certainly excited to be able to offer assistance to a local family who is need of safe, affordable housing.”
Funding for building and renovation projects of Habitat comes through donations and sales of items at the Habitat Restore. The non-profit organization is a 501(c)3 organization and all contributions, either cash or donated items for the store, are tax-deductible.
To make a donation and to pick up the reprint of Ms. Sims’ work, visit Habitat’s location at 1606 Douglas Avenue. The Habitat offices are located inside the Restore. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
