It’s homecoming week at T.R. Miller High School and the students have selected the 2020 Homecoming Queen and Court.
Treniti Blunt was named queen with senior attendants Madison Kirkland and Makenna Rowell. Junior attendants are Sarah Hartley and Makenzie Thomas. Sophomore attendants are Kaitlyn Barnett and Peyton Myrick. Freshmen attendants are KaMari Fountain and Anna Beth Hawsey.
Homecoming activities are planned for alumni and the student body for Friday, Oct. 9 with an alumni gathering spot, a pep rally, parade, crowning of the queen and introduction of the court and the football game against Hillcrest.
Lisa Atkinson, one of the organizers for T.R. Miller homecoming activities, said one part of the day that has become part of the tradition would not take place.
“We will not host an alumni tea or have school tours this year,” Atkinson said. “We understand that COVID-19 conditions are a concern, and our homecoming committee has worked tirelessly to put into place many provisions to ensure the safety of our alumni, students, faculty and staff during the homecoming festivities on our campus.”
Although returning alumni will not be treated to the tea this year, there will be a gathering place for those who want to celebrate on campus.
“In an effort to offer our alumni a memorable experience with their classmates, we will open the practice field beginning at 10:30 a.m. to create a tailgate atmosphere,” Atkinson said. “We want to encourage classes to bring tents and chairs to enjoy their time together while on our campus.”
Atkinson said the gathering area would remain open until time for the pep rally at noon at Brewton Municipal Stadium.
“We will not be able to serve an area for returning classes and we ask that everyone practice social distancing while at the pep rally,” Atkinson said. “we ask that our alumni give our students the opportunity to exit the stadium before they begin to leave.”
Following the pep rally, the floats and other units will leave the school at 1:40 p.m. for a 2 p.m. start to the parade through downtown Brewton.
Alumni will be allowed to bring floats to the school campus beginning at 9 a.m. with decorating beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the circle in front of the school, officials said.
The evening will culminate back at Brewton Municipal Stadium with a pre-game show beginning at 6:30 p.m. Alumni classes will be recognized at that time and the homecoming court will be presented ending with the crowning of the queen. Kick-off for the game against Hillcrest of Evergreen will be at 7 p.m.
Due to the 50 percent seating capacity guidelines in place at Brewton Municipal Stadium, no reserved seating will be made for returning members of alumni.
