With what began as a donation to the Brewton Lions Club more than 16 years ago, has turned into an annual event that draws car enthusiasts from miles around.
The annual Brewton Lions Club “Ribs and Rides” show is set for Saturday, Nov. 7 in downtown Brewton at Camp 31 BBQ.
Organizing the event is a well-known car show man in the area, Glen Freeman.
Freeman, along with help from fellow car show organizer, Sam Archer, held at car show in Brewton behind what is now Trustmark Bank in downtown Brewton nearly two decades ago.
Freeman said that when there was a little money left over after paying for awards, the question came up with what to do with the money.
“I was familiar with Patty Mitchell and the Lions Club and felt they would use the money wisely,” Freeman said. “After we made the donation, we talked about it and decided to do the show again specifically as a fundraiser for the Lions Club.”
Freeman said the annual event has been that way ever since, even though he is not a member of the Club.
“I am glad to be affiliated with the club in this manner,” Freeman said. “They are a great group of guys to work with and it is always a lot of fun.”
With the current COVID-19 concerns, Freeman said the outdoor venue is one that allows him to feel more comfortable with the implications of the virus.
“I am well aware of the virus and I am very cautious about where I go and what I do,” Freeman said. “It has been that way since March. Since this is an outdoor event, I believe that makes it less vulnerable for the virus. I will advocate that each showman stay with their car to observe social distancing and, of course, wearing masks will help.”
Hugh Miller, secretary for the organization, provided information regarding the show and associated events.
“The event is set to begin at 8 a.m. with the arrival of vehicles in the show,” Miller said. “The show will conclude at 2:30 p.m.
Each year the organization sponsors the “Ribs and Rides” event held downtown at the Camp 31 restaurant location on St. Joseph Avenue.
Registration fees for vehicles in the show are $25 for one vehicle and $40 for two vehicles. Each registration will include a $10 meal ticket for the showman.
Viewing for the public is free of charge for the outside show. Indoor restrooms will be available during the show.
There will also be a 50-50 raffle during the event with door prizes and entertainment.
