Mr. Richard Brown, 80, died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at his residence in Evergreen. He was a native of Piava, Miss. and had been a resident of Evergreen for many years. He was coach and headmaster at Sparta Academy for almost 30 years. He was a basketball coach at Alabama Southern for 10 years. He was also the personnel director at Georgia Pacific. In April the Alabama House of Representatives made a resolution commending Coach Brown for a distinguished career of 53 years in coaching. He was also a member of the U.S. Navy during World War II, and with the U.S. Army in the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Brown of Evergreen; two sons, Wes Brown and Russ Brown, both of Evergreen; two daughters, Lisa Brown of Titusville, and Karen Layton of Evergreen; three brothers, Dale (Janice) Brown and Earl Brown, both of Pensacola, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 6, at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Evergreen, with Cope Funeral Home of Evergreen directing.
