The mud, the muck, the heat — none of it could dampen the spirits of the more than 400 participants in Saturday’s Murder Creek Mud Run event.

Organizers registered 490 participants from 21 states for the event held throughout the parks areas of Brewton.Hundreds of spectators were also on hand for the event.

“After a massive amount of rain overnight on Friday evening, we deemed the creek to be unsafe to cross and had to reroute the course two hours before start time,” said Julie Wolff, race director from Phoenix Race group. “We see it as another obstacle that we got through and we’re able to start the event with a small delay.”

Local organizations benefited from the event with a division of proceeds from the event going to Paws Crossed, Backpack Buddies and More Heart than Scars.

“The event was a huge success and has people talking about the 2022 event already,” Wolff said. “The city of Brewton, our sponsors, Paws Crossed, Backpack Buddies, Mayor Lovelace and Mr. Steve Layton were extremely instrumental in the success of the event.”

Wolff said the group plans to be back in Brewton to help organized more events.

“The camaraderie, smiling faces and overall great atmosphere made for an amazing race day,” Wolff said. “Brewton is a special place. We fell in love with it from our first visit. From the flowers to the people, it’s extremely welcoming. We will be back in 2022!”
