While sporting news in our immediate area is kind of in a lull period right now, that does not mean state and national sporting news are in a lull.
First, let's get to some big news. Well, I call it big news that hit the newspapers and Internet sites Monday and Tuesday.
Former University of Alabama quarterback, Alabama native and NFL quarterback Kenny Stabler has been arrested for driving under the influence in Robertsdale. According to a story written in the Mobile Press Register on Tuesday by our publisher's husband, Josh Bean, Stabler was arrested and refused to take a breath test. Stabler posted a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court for a hearing on August 13.
This arrest marked the second time Stabler had been arrested since 2001.
Also, adding to Stabler's resume is the fact that he is the University of Alabama football's color analyst with Eli Gold.
It would be different if Stabler were not out in the public as he is on the radio, but some standards need to be applied here. Press releases from the University said Stabler would not be fired from his job, but I kind of disagree with this.
Other people who usually commit these kind of acts that are closely associated with the university get the ax, so why not Stabler? I know he is not a coach, but hey, how about getting Jay Barker or Roger Shultz to join as color analyst. Both oc fhsm have radio and sports backgrounds.
Anyway, on to a different subject:
The College World Series teams have now been determined.
Most notably, LSU has advanced after enduring a dramatic comeback on Sunday to even the series and then defeated UC-Irvine 21-7 to advance.
Oh yeah, on a funny note, UC-Irvine's mascot is the Anteaters. Other teams advancing are: Miami, Florida State, Georgia, Stanford, North Carolina, Rice and Fresno State.
Staying with the theme of baseball, Ken Griffey, Jr. has hit his 600th homerun. With this, Griffey joined Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa on the 600 list.
In the NFL, recent Super Bowl champion Michael Strahan with the Giants has retired after a 15-year NFL career. Strahan, 36 years old, leaves a $4 million salary on his last year of contract.
In basketball, the Lakers are down 2-0 to the Boston Celtics in the NBA final with game three to be played last night in Los Angeles.
In hockey, Dominik Hasek has announced his retirement five days after winning the Stanley Cup with the Detroit Red Wings. Hasek, the goalie of the Red Wings played 16 seasons in the NHL.
Well, I hope this gets you caught up in the sports world. On a more local scene, both area high school football teams have began summer workouts. Coverage of that will be coming soon.
Volleyball teams have also began working out in preparation for their upcoming seasons.
Little League and Babe Ruth all stars will be announced soon according to league presidents.
