For many years, Brewton and East Brewton ministers have lead residents in prayer on a day of national observance.
Back in the early 1950s, Congress was called upon through an evangelical movement to take time to pray for the country — as a country.
In 1952, President Harry S. Truman proclaimed a National Day of Prayer with the first service being observed on July 4 that year.
Evangelist Billy Graham led services with more than 20,000 people on the steps of the Capital on Feb. 3 that year, which lead to the proclamation for an annual observance of prayer.
That history has continued with the annual date being set each year for May 4 – the first Thursday in May – by President Ronald Regan.
The local service will begin at 12:05 p.m. Thursday on the front lawn of the Escambia County Courthouse on Belleville Avenue. The service will conclude by 12:35 p.m.
First Baptist Church Pastor, the Rev. Cavin Cawthon, will open the service followed by the opening prayer by the Rev. Russell Clausell Jr.
The remaining order of service will include the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flags led by the Rev. Blake Mohling who will also offer a prayer and scripture reading honoring military personnel and families; The Rev. Tommy Quick will share a scripture and prayer for family; the Rev. Parker Johnson will offer scripture and prayer for churches; the Rev. Bob Ellisor will offer prayer and scriptures focusing on business; the Rev. Larry Patterson will share scripture and prayer for education; the Rev. Todd Ray will share in song with “My Country ‘Tis of Thee,” the Rev. Jeff Edwards will share scripture and prayer for government; the Rev. Macon Phillips will share scripture and prayer for media. The program will close with the Rev. Todd Ray leading in song with “God Bless America,” followed by the benediction by the Rev. Cavin Cawthon.
For those unable to attend the noon gathering, the sanctuary and prayer room at First Baptist Church, adjacent to the Escambia County Courthouse, will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In case of rain, services will be conducted in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church on Belleville Avenue at the appointed time.
