A candlelight vigil is set for this evening at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn of the Escambia County Courthouse on Belleville Avenue in Brewton. The purpose of the vigil is to bring awareness to a growing epidemic of overdose deaths across the country.
Recovery Specialist Meagan White and Amanda Salter with People Engaged in Recovery (PIER) are spear-heading the event set tonight.
International Overdose Awareness Day is the world’s largest annual campaign to end overdose, White said.
“It is a time to remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of family and loved ones left behind,” White said.
White said everyone is invited to join others on the lawn of the courthouse to bring awareness to the issue.
“Join us at the Escambia County Courthouse in Brewton Alabama, as we come together as a community and raise awareness, while remembering those we have lost to overdose and also celebrate survivors and those in recovery,” White said. “We will have music, speakers, and at the closing of our event we will light a candle in remembrance of the ones we have lost.”
The event is open to the public.
