A life-long mission for Lisa McMillan has been to feed the hungry. She was joined by her husband, Freddie, in that mission and the pair continue to feed anyone looking for a meal.
In what has become a tradition in our community, the McMillans will once again open Drexell & Honeybee’s Donations Only Restaurant with a full holiday meal on Thursday.
The service will begin at 11 a.m. and will continue to fill plates until 1 p.m., Lisa said.
The annual offering is just part of the mission that put Lisa on the path of feeding folks stemming from a part of her life when she was hungry and broke.
“When I lived in Grand Rapids, Mich., I was young and pregnant without family or a deer freind,” Lisa said. “I will never forget it was on Thanksgiving day that I could smell all the food being cooked all around me with nothing to eat. It was the loneliest day of my life.”
That feeling is what triggered the desire to make sure others never faced that feeling of hunger.
“I had no idea how to make a difference for others who might end up like I was back then,” Lisa said. “But, I do now. It fills my heart with joy to know that we give people the option of having lunch with us rather than sitting at home alone.”
Whether you are alone or even have a friend in need, the McMillans, along with some faithful volunteers, will be dishing up a traditional Thanksgiving meal.
There is no charge for the meal, but donations are always welcome — just like every day at the restaurant.
The meal will feature traditional fare including smoked turkey, glazed ham, fresh greens, cornbread dressing, fresh peas, mashed potatoes and gravy, yeast rolls, cornbread, cranberry sauce, assorted desserts and even some hot apple cider.
The McMillans and their unique restaurant have been featured around the world for their humanitarian approach to restaurant services.
Visitors to the establishment dine without the being obligated to pay. There is no cash register in the building and the donation box is private.
“I know sometimes the holiday seasons can be a hard time for us,” Lisa siad. “But I also know that there is always a reason to rejoice.”
