Brewton Police are continuing an investigation into the death of an infant on July 6.
According to police officials, officers with the Brewton Police Department were dispatched to a residence at 306 Martin Luther King Ave. in response to a report of a child not breathing.
Officer David Mathis responded and was approached by Gerald Thomas, who was holding 3-week-old Zariah LaShae Collins in a blanket. Thomas told the officer the baby had stopped breathing and needed to go to the hospital.
Mathis began performing CPR on the infant after failing to find a pulse. Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene and took over life-saving efforts from Mathis.
The baby was transported to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 10:53 a.m.
Brewton Police Chief Monte McGougin said foul play was not suspected in the case, but an investigation into the cause of death of the infant remains under way.
