Hal Parker was sworn into office Monday as the newest member of the East Brewton City Council.
Parker was appointed to the position as Council-man following the resignation of Kenny Hultz recently. Parker immediately assumed his duties and took his seat to participate in his first council meeting in East Brewton.
The swearing in of Parker was conducted prior to the beginning of Monday’s regular meeting of the council. Escambia County Probate Judge Robert Doug Agerton administered the oath of office.
In other business, the East Brewton Council acted on a recommendation from Mayor Terry Clark to increase garbage and trash fees for city residents.
“We are $30,000 in the red in our garbage department,” Clark said. “We have got to do something. Inflation has finally caught up with us down here and we have to do something to offset that. We’re sorry, this isn’t our fault, but something has to be done.”
Following discussion, the council unanimously agreed to raise the garbage fees by $3 per month and the trash fees by $3 per month for each city residence. The increase will go into effect with the June billing giving the city ample time to notify residents of the increase in garbage and trash fees.
The council also agreed to look at the fees currently charged to businesses in the city and a possible increase in fees for services in the near future.
The council also approved the appointment of Russell Martin to the city’s water board.
