In the very near future, driving down Belleville Avenue in Brewton will become a much smoother ride, thanks to action by the Brewton City Council in Monday’s meeting.
City Clerk Brooke Hartin said the project, which will include paving Belleville Avenue from Rankin Street south to St. Joseph Avenue, could begin within the next few weeks.
“Within the next month we should see the project beginning,” Hartin told the council. “They are anxious to begin the project.”
Bullard Excavating was awarded the project that is being funded partially by the Rebuild Alabama Grant funds.
The total cost for the project is $352,928, Hartin said.
“The grant will cover $250,000 of the cost,” Hartin said. “The city will be paying the excess.”
In other business Monday, the council:
• approved an agreement with Mississippi Mosquito Control LLC in the amount of $20,080 to spray for mosquitoes in the city. The spraying will be done through September, Hartin said, with a capture of mosquitoes to inspect the species and the proper treatment to eliminate mosquitoes;
• approved a recycleing grant agreement with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) allowing for expansion of the current recycling program in the city. Hartin said a previous $9,000 grant helped a small expansion, but the current grant of $98,000 will allow for further expansion. “This will give us more bins and cover transportation costs and the cost of eduction in our schools,” Hartin said. “This will put additional bins in new locations as the current bins remain where they currently are. These will be new placements.”
• approved a public hearing to consider a liquor license for HNM 101 LLC dba Diamond #5 in Brewton. The business was recently acquired by new owners requiring a liquor license change. No date was set for the public hearing for the new owners;
• approved a public hearing to consider a wireless telecommunications tower to be loaced at 113 McClellan Street in Brewton. Risk Management Administrator at City of Brewton Brock Holt said the public hearing would be the next step in the process to approve the tower build. “This is a two-step process,” Holt told the council. “It has been before the Planning Commission and they are submitting a recommendation that the plan for the tower move forward. The second step is to hold a public hearing.” No date for that public hearing was set Monday;
• Mayor Yank Lovelace made appointments to the Board of Zoning Adjustments Committee and the City Planning Commission Committee as the final action taken during Monday’s meeting.
The next meeting of the Brewton City Council will be Monday, July 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Brewton City Hall on Douglas Avenue and is open to the public
