As of press time Tuesday, signatures on documents were all that was needed to approve the plans that would allow the green light for construction of a new fire house in Riverview.
The Riverview Town Council met last Thursday for the first reading of an ordinance that would allow the Dixonville Volunteer Fire Department to lease space for the new fire house on town hall property.
Riverview Mayor Lisa McCall said the planned work is a good move for the community.
“I’m excited about this,” McCall said. “We have a lot of good things happening here and this is just one of them.”
McCall said the property for the new fire house is adjacent to town hall and would be a 99 year lease.
“That means we won’t kick them off and they’re pretty much here for life,” McCall said. “We are excited that Dixonville will be our neighbors.”
The planned fire house would be the second for the volunteer organization that currently has about 28 members on the crew. Dixonville VFD has a facility located on Travis Road where operations are staged.
“This means we will be covered from one end of our community to the other,” McCall said. “This will be one way our residents may be able to see a drop in their insurance rates since this will improve the ISO ratings for the area.”
An ISO fire rating is a score provided to fire departments and insurance companies by the Insurance Services Office (ISO). The score reflects how prepared a community and area is for fires.
McCall said with the addition of the new station, Riverview will no longer have to rely on outside agencies to assist in the community.
“this addition will allow us to depend completley on Dixonville VFD,” McCall said. “Right now, we occassionally have to have outside agencies and departments help in some instances. We are excited to be able to support our own fire department.”
McCall said the plans for construction will move foward following the final document approvals but could happen in the coming weeks.
Joel Migas serves as the chief for the Dixonville Volunteer Fire Department with Jeff DeRidder working through documentations and firefighting.
“I hope you all are excited,” McCall said to the VFD personnel at Thursday meeting. “We are excited about this and a lot of things happening in our community.”
McCall said other activity and plans for the community include a water system upgrade, possible Mediacom coverage and upgrades to fire hydrant systems throughout the community.
Construction of the new Dixonville Volunteer Fire House #2 is being made possible through grant funding and donation of materials for the new facility.
The new facility will be located on acreage included in the Town of Riverview property that is currently unused by the township.
