It was the first games of the season for T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal Friday night in Brewton and East Brewton, respectively.
Both teams were able to hold of their rivals to put wins on the board in their first games.
T.R. Miller’s Tigers defeated the Hillcrest of Evergreen Jaguars by a score of 26-20.
W.S. Neal’s Eagles defeated the Georgiana Panthers by a score of 22-12.
At T.R. Miller, the game see-sawed in the first half but ended in a tie of 14-all as the buzzer sounded at the half. As the second half got underway, the third quarter would find the numbers increasing for the Tigers. A TD added 6 points, but a failed PAT kept any additional points off the board. That score put the Tigers up 20-14. That would be the score until late in the fourth quarter when the Jags crossed the goal line to tie the game again with just two minutes left to play. A time-out to consider their next move, the Jags came back on the field with a decision to go for a two-point conversion. When that failed the game was once again tied at 20-20. The Tigers got the ball, but there wasn’t enough time on the board to make much of a move forcing an overtime to decide a winner. As the game moved into overtime, the Jags got their chance at the ball first but couldn’t make anything happen with their four-downs of play. When the Tigers got their shot at the ball, it would only take three plays for them to find the end zone and the winning points on the board. Final score: T.R. Miller 26, Hillcrest of Evergreen 20.
At W.S. Neal, the first quarter of the game was scoreless with the Eagles scoring first with under 5 minutes to play. Making a good two-point conversion, the Eagles were on top 8-0. In the second half of play, the Eagles were able to rack up another 7 points with 7 minutes to play in the third quarter. Georgiana worked to put some points on the board and made it happen just before the end of the third quarter. The Eagles blocked their PAT to keep their lead 15-6. The Eagles answered that Panther score with another of their own with less than a minute to play in the third bringing their score to 22 over the Panthers’ 6. Georgiana would put a few more points on the board early in the fourth quarter. Their two-point conversion attempt was thwarted by the Eagles keeping WSN ahead, 22-12. That would be the final score of the game with the Eagles putting a win to start their season.
T.R. Miller’s Tigers will host UMS-Wright Prep on Friday, Sept. 1 with kick-off at 7 p.m.
W.S. Neal’s Eagles will travel to McIntosh on Friday, Sept. 1 for a non-region game. Kick-off will be at 7 p.m.
