The Brewton City Council declared a piece of property as “surplus” during Monday’s meeting of the group.
The property, located at 572 Industrial Park Drive, was most recently occupied by Frontier Technologies.
City Clerk Brooke Hartin said this was the first step in a process that would allow the city to sell or otherwise dispose of the parcel.
“This step has to be taken before we can do anything with the property,” Hartin told the council. “After some additional paperwork, we would be able to sell the property if that is what we choose.”
In other business Monday, the council:
• approved the closure of Tiger Drive for the annual Dixieland Band Festival set for Oct. 28.
Hartin told the council that only a portion of Tiger Drive – from Belleville Avenue to the shopping center entrance – would be closed on that date. She also said that Brewton Police have been notified and indicated that a larger-than-normal police presence would be seen that day.
• approved a resolution to accept the Airport Improvement Grant for Fiscal Year 2024. Hartin said the annual grant will provide funding for a new airport terminal at the Brewton Municipal Airport. Possible match of 5% may come into play, but Hartin said funds for the match are in place that would essentially mean a 0% match out of current funds;
• approved an accounting services agreement with Aviozo Group to prepare for the FY23 annual audit. Hartin said the group had been used for this purpose in years past, and since the fiscal year for the city comes to an end on Sept. 30, it is time to make arrangements for that audit now;
• approved the purchase of materials for a gas line project including upgrades and repairs. Utility Superintendent Ray Madden told the council that upgrades to some lines are necessary. “We will need to install a new control valve on our line serviced by Gulf South Hotline,” Madden said. “That line serves our residential areas. We do not use as much gas from them as we do Florida Gas, but we do need to be able to access their service when there is a need. We had a need this past July and that could happen again.” Madden said the cost of the materials for the upgrades and the repairs necessary would come with a price tag of $60,893.
