Three East Brewton residents appeared before the East Brewton City Council last week in an effort to address concerns over animals in their neighborhood.
Raymond Beasley, Troy Scott and Tommy Jernigan said the dog problem is getting out of hand and is causing issues for those who live in the neighborhood.
“I want to thank you for what has already been done,” Beasley said. “But this problem has outgrown that work.”
Beasley said on one particular day, the short drive from his house on Schad Street to Forrest Avenue as many as nine dogs could be seen wandering the streets.
“These dogs are damaging our property and making messes with garbage every where,” Beasley said. “We can’t keep begging the council to do something about it. We used to have a good neiborhood, but we don’t anymore.”
East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark said there wasn’t much more the city could do about the problem.
“When we do pick up dogs we don’t have anywhere to take them,” Clark said. “The dog pound is almost always full and they can’t take any more. When they are full, we can’t pick them up. But, I can assure you, we will do the best we can. I hope to talk with the Sheriff’s Office and see what we can work out with these problems.”
The City of East Brewton utilizes the services of the Animal Shelter operated by the Escambia County Sherriff’s Office in coopration with the City of Brewton.
