D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital announced that Jessica Sutton, RN, Women’s and Infant’s (OB) Nurse Manager has completed training as a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST).
A CPST is a person who has gone through extensive training to ensure children are properly secured in the child restraint seat. During the educational class, a CPST has to learn by demonstration check-offs and complete numerous written tests with a total score of 84 percent.
“Jessica has completed a very important training for the safety of our newborn babies as well as for the peace of mind for the baby’s families.” stated Stacy Hines, Hospital Administrator. “We are fortunate that we can now offer this service to our community.”
During her training, Sutton learned about various topics such as the appropriate seat belts to properly restrain a child, the locations of airbags in numerous vehicles, and the safety of a child passenger in correlation to the air bags. She gained extensive knowledge related to car and booster seats, recalls and expiration dates, and allowed accessories. The class covered harnesses that restrain children properly, the proper height and weight of a passenger based on location inside the vehicle, and the different types of child safety seats. Sutton completed the course achieving a perfect score of 100 percent.
A CPST’s main goal is to ensure a child is a safe passenger and the caregiver is comfortable with the knowledge of the child safety restraint being used.
