A Brewton man remained behind bars as of press time Tuesday, charged with a felony count of burglary in connection with a break-in Saturday night in the Pollard/McCall area of the community.
Joshua James Land, 43, of Brewton has been charged with burglary third, which is a class C felony after homeowners discovered him in their home Saturday night around 9 p.m.
Heath and Christy Gibson had returned to their home after an evening out to find Land hiding in a bedroom closet.
“We went to the movies and arrived home at 9:00 to find a thief in our bedroom,” Heath said in a social media post. “Christy went in our bedroom by the closet and saw a man in our closet. She came running out hollering that there was a man in our closet. I hollered for Brodie (Gibson’s son) to get the gun.
Heath then made his way into the bedroom to confront the intruder.
“I met him at the door of my bedroom and drug him into the living room and held him at gunpoint until law enforcement showed up,” Heath said. “His driver’s license said Joshua James Land and he was taken into custody but he had someone else who bolted into the woods”
Although the intruder was taken away from the home by law enforcement, the family continues to deal with the incident.
In a social media post on Sunday, Christy Gibson said she was fearful following the incident.
“This morning at 12:51 a.m. I had to make a choice,” Christy said. “Do I walk to the bathroom by myself or do I wake Heath up and make him check the closet before I get up?”
Christy said “In the few seconds I was contemplating my options, a song by Elevation Worship called Trust in God came to my mind. The first two lines are, ‘You did not create me to worry, You did not create me to fear.’ So, I slid out of the covers and adjusted my big girl panties and I walked past my closet and said a prayer for Joshua Land. This home is my blessing from God and I will not allow the devil to cause fear in my home! Was I hesitant? Of course! Will I have better protection for my family? Of course! But this morning I am rested and ready for the day!”
Land has an arrest record dating back to 2013 with an arrest that year on charges of theft of property and burglary. His record also indicates he has faced arrest on drug charges.
No bond amount had been given for Land as of press time Tuesday.
No other suspect has been arrested in this incident.
