Rev. Arnold Rex Long
Hiawassee, Ga.
Rev. Arnold Rex Long passed away at home in Hiawassee, Georgia on August 21st, 2024. Born in Oklahoma City, OK, to Dr. Henry Eugene Long and Ruby Lee Baggett Long. Rex attended T.R. Miller High School in Brewton, AL, earned a B.S. from Troy State College, taught high school & coached football for 8 years before accepting the call to ministry and becoming ordained in 1969.
After earning a Masters of Divinity Degree from Southeastern Theological Seminary in 1973 he served the Lord as a minister to Southern Baptist congregations across North Georgia and volunteered in Georgia Disaster Relief programs for several years.
Rex was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Eleanor Long, Lorene Norsworthy, Mavis Parker, Ruby Jean Wheeler, brothers Bruce, Jack, and Bobby Long, all of whom were residents of Brewton, Alabama.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sherrill Potter Long, daughter Laurey Faye Dean (Scott) of Waynesville, NC and son Arnold Mark Long (Sigrid) grandchildren, Lea, Julia, and Anna of Vienna, Austria and one brother Billy Scott Long of Heflin, AL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 27th, 2024, from 10:00 am -11:00 am at Macedonia Baptist Church, followed by the funeral service to be held at 11:00 at Macedonia Baptist Church with Dr. Wade Lott officiating and music by Rev. Harry Gilbert. The church is located at 1675 U.S. 76, Hiawassee, GA.
A graveside service will be at Floral Hills Memory Gardens, Section “Sermon on the Mount” at 3150 Lawrenceville Hwy, Tucker, GA at 2:30 pm.
