It's been a busy time for Brewton Street Department Director Ray Madden and his staff, as they have had to deal with a pair of burst sewer lines. At Tuesday's regular meeting, the Brewton City Council approved $26,555 in funds for emergency repairs that had to be made on Glen Road and also Gordon Lane at Douglas Avenue.
According to Madden, the break on Glen Road came very close to causing major damage to a home.
With an eye on preventing similar occurrences in the future, the council unanimously approved bids for administrative and engineering services for a sewer improvement project that will be funded through a community development block grant (CDBG).
Ewing Connor and Associates submitted the only bid on the administrative side, with a bid of $42,000 and CDG Engineers was the low bid for engineering work at $58,500.
The council also awarded a bid to McClain Contracting Company, Inc. for the bridge replacement work on North St. Joseph St. The bid was for $169,782 and will fund a project that Mayor Ted Jennings said councilman Walter "Jake" Lewis had been working on for a long time.
Carol Gordy addressed the council on behalf of the Brewton Main Street Program. She said a group had been meeting over the summer with the intention of reviving Brewton's Main Street program. She asked the council for its endorsement and for $2,000 for use as startup money and to help serve as the match portion for several grants.
According to Gordy, the Main Street program will help increase Brewton's tax base through education in the schools, additional sales to visitors and the recruitment of new businesses. She said it will include everyone interested and that the results will benefit the entire community.
