If you’re a witch just itching to dust off your broom for a ride, your time has come.
The Witches of Brewton, organized under the leadership of Meredith Buck, is an group of random witches (and warlocks) riding to benefit someone with a medical need.
This year the group of organizers have elected to ride for Hayden Brake.
Buck said this is the fifth ride, and could be the biggest yet.
“This is our fifth ride,” Buck said. “We have grown every year and this year could be even bigger. We are excited to be able to help Hayden and her family this year.”
Buck said Brake, a 16-year-old in the community, has experienced some medical issues throughout her young life.
A brief explanation of Brake’s medical condition has been made public by the group.
“Hayden is a courageous 16-year-old whose life has been marked by resilience and determination. Born with congenital nephrotic syndrome, a rare condition, Hadyn began dialysis at just six months old. Her health took a turn for the worse at age two, prompting doctors to recommend a kidney transplant, despite her small size of 17 pounds. In a remarkable act of kindness, her grandmother donated her kidney, a gift that functioned beyond expectations until 2022.
Although Hadyn’s kidney eventually failed, just shy of her 16th birthday, her family remains hopeful. She now undergoes hemodialysis three times a week, with her family making regular trips to Birmingham until a suitable donor is found. Hadyn’s parents, Amanda and Brandon, are being tested as potential matches, but the process is lengthy. Throughout her ordeal, Hadyn remains optimistic, drawing strength from her mantra, “It won’t be like this forever!”
Registration for the 2024 ride opened last week and will be available until ride day, Buck said.
The ride will be held Oct. 26 beginning at the Brewton Area YMCA on Belleville Avenue. Line-up time will be announced closer to ride day.
The ride will take Witches (and warlocks) down Belleville Avenue through the heart of Brewton to end at Market Park. The fun will continue at the park with photos and the annual “Witches Dance,” performance.
