Months of hard work and a decade of practice landed the city in the winner’s circle at last month’s America in Bloom symposium with top three finishes in several categories, the top award for the population category and national awards for best youth garden program and best landscaped areas.
“I am very proud of our workers and the way they always give their very best to keep our city among the most beautiful in the country,” said Mayor Yank Lovelace. “The only way we can continue the growth in our economy and keep our community thriving is to invest in ourselves, and America In Bloom has shown us how to focus those efforts to get the best return.”
Brewton entered the national program in 2014 and joined more than 300 communities across the country to take part in the program. Some 40 communities from a few hundred to tens of thousands in population were part of the program in 2024.
Brewton has won numerous awards over the last 10 years dominating the population category in the past five years.
Communities are judged on seven criteria: floral impact, landscaped areas, urban forestry, community vitality, celebrating heritage, environmental efforts and overall impression.
Two advisors visited Brewton in June for a tour of the work in the city, and the scores were announced at the recent annual meeting.
Thanks to advice from the advisors, Brewton applied for and won a $100,000 grant (see related story on Page 1) to plant trees in the city over the next year.
Several team members attended the gathering in Columbus, Ohio with training, tours of garden areas and idea exchanges with member communities.
