Mrs. Bertha Mae Waggoner Murphy, 94, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2008, at a local hospital after an extended illness. She was a native of Hillsboro, Miss., and a former resident of Dothan, before moving to Brewton in 1959. She was a graduate of the Baptist Bible Institute in New Orleans, a homemaker and a member of the Catawba Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Bennett Murphy, a son, Truett Murphy; her brothers, Marvin and William Waggoner; and her sisters, Thelma and Bell Noel and Eula Sigrest.
She is survived by a son, David (Gayle) Murphy of Brewton; a daughter, Linda Hinojos of Grand Prairie, Texas; four sisters, Gladys Welch of Grand Prairie, Novelene Brewer of Austell, Ga., Lodena Waggoner of Forrest, Miss., and Retha Hatch of Lincoln, Neb.; and five grandchildren, Marie Murphy, Carol Rauschkolb, Joy Garretson, Mimi Hinojos, and Caleb Hinojos.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 12 noon, at the Catawba Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Bert Bounds, the Rev. Jeff Edwards, and the Rev. John Baxter officiating. Burial followed at Catawba Springs Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
