Maybe it was an inconvenience. Maybe it got a little warm. Maybe you were late for your next appointment.
But did the lines really matter? Wasn't it amazing to see so many people at the polls Tuesday? No matter who won this election, democracy in action was a wonderful sight.
Voters were lined up at several polls in the Brewton area by the time they opened at 7 a.m. There were longtime voters, first-time voters, voters excited about the Democrats, voters excited about the Republicans.
Presidential elections tend to draw more voters, but this turnout may have been unprecedented.
But you know what? Every election should be this way - every quadrennial, every mid-term, every county ballot, every municipal election. Our right to vote is sacred. It is the heart of the democracy in which we live, and we were excited to see such passion for voting on Tuesday.
And while we're praising voters for showing up on this one day, we need to give a lot of credit to the poll workers who show up on every election day, whether it's a primary or a referendum or a major election. These workers keep the cogs of democracy running smoothly, and they work a long day when you consider polls are open for 12 hours. We appreciate their dedication.
We are waking up this morning knowing that on Jan. 20, we will have a new president. As we write this, we have no idea who that man will be, but we are proud that so many people went to the polls to help determine it.
