With just one junior, three freshman, one eighth grader, and three seventh graders competing, the T.R. Miller Lady Tiger cross county team captured the class 3A runner up spot Saturday in the state cross country meet in Moulton.
The team finished just seven points behind eventual state champion Montgomery Academy, who was running with a senior, two juniors, one freshman and one eighth grader.
Karissa Nelson, a seventh grader on the Lady Tiger team, took second overall for the Lady Tigers.
Both Youngblood's and Nelson's brothers competed for the T.R. Miller Tiger boys cross country team this season. While the Tiger team did not make the state meet, Nelson and Youngblood competed as individuals and placed. Youngblood won second, and Nelson third. Youngblood is a senior and Nelson a junior.
T.R. Miller Tiger cross county coach Rob Atkinson had many good things to say about his team.
Atkinson gave much credit to former Tiger coach Dale Ash and some others who have helped him out this season while he was also coaching football.
In the race on Saturday, Geoff Youngblood placed second overall in the boy's race with a time of 17:04 and Brandon Nelson took third with a time of 17:05.
On the girls' side, Karissa Nelson placed second overall (19:17) followed by Shelby Youngblood (19:45) in third, Katie Nelson (19:47) in fourth and Amber Nelson (20:21) in sixth place.
Desiree Gibbs rounded out the Tigers as far as points were concerned with a 39th place finish with a time of 23:30.
Amber Terry placed 41st with a time of 23:36.
Abbi Carlson finished 66th with a time of 25:31 and Taylor Guthrie finished 69th with a time of 25:35.
