An East Brewton woman perished in a house fire on Saturday morning despite the best efforts of first responders.
Dawn Busby, 40, was unable to escape the blaze that broke out just after 8 a.m. Saturday morning at her Shoffner Street address in the 1500 block.
Three other residents of the home were able to escape the blaze that was reported at 8:39 a.m. Saturday.
Kevin Hoomes, assistant fire chief for the East Brewton Fire Department, said the blaze was fully involved when department personnel arrived on scene.
“When we got to the home, flames and heavy smoke were already showing,” Hoomes said. “We had a total of 24 firefighters on the scene working to extinguish the blaze.”
Along with East Brewton Fire Department, Brewton Fire Department and Ridge Road Fire Department personnel also responded to the call, Hoomes said.
Despite diligent work of fire fighters, Busby was not saved from the blazing home.
“Three other people were able to get out along with a few animals,” Hoomes said. “There were three dogs that died in the fire.”
Five fire trucks responded to the call along with help from police and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) workers, Hoomes said.
Crews remained on the scene for nearly five hours following the fire to ensure the flames were fully extinguished.
Alabama Fire Marshall officials were on the scene Saturday to gather evidence in an investigation into the cause of the blaze. No report has been made to the East Brewton Fire Department on their findings.
Family members displaced due to the blaze are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Hoomes said Red Cross officials were on the scene Saturday to offer assistance to those affected by the fire.
Obituary information for Ms. Busby can be found on page 3 of today’s edition of The Brewton Standard.
