A wave of red ribbons cascaded in the wind on Friday as the community welcomed a resident home.
Ken Lett Jr., a sophomore at T.R. Miller High School, was greeted with red ribbons tied around trees, sign posts and bill boards Friday as he returned to his hometown following weeks of treatment in an Atlanta, Ga., medical facility.
Lett, who was injured in a September 2024 game in Mobile, had spent the past months at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, receiving treatment following a broken neck injury in the game.
Lett’s mother, Tonya, said the welcome was one her family will long remember.
“Thank God, We made it home!” Tonya said. “We smiled bigger and brighter with every red bow we saw and welcome message received. We are truly humbled and incredibly thankful!”
Lett will continue his treatment with therapy
“This journey does not end here,” Tonya said. “Ken is more determined than ever. We’re home and he is very excited to be back at our church Cathedral of Faith and back at his school, T. R. Miller High School. His therapy continues next week and we are still believing God to finish the miraculous work he has begun in Ken!”
Lett was injured in the opening play of a game on September 27, 2024 in Mobile as the Tigers took on the UMS-Wright team. The injury would send the player to a Mobile hospital for a period of time to later be transferred to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta to be treated for the injury. Spending more than three months at the Center, Lett and his family were eager to return home.
Tonya Lett joined her son at those medical facilities as he began the long recovery from the injury. As Ken’s graduation from the Center marked his time for departure, Brewton’s citizens began preparing for the family’s return home.
Businesses and churches throughout the city displayed red ribbons as a sign of support for the family as they made their return.
The red ribbon welcome was initiated by Liz and David Knowles as a gesture to show continued support from the community and its residents.
