In their first ever state Little League tournament appearance, East Brewton’s 11- and 12-year-old team picked up a 2-1 win over Roanoke Saturday night in Huntsville.
But East Brewton fell into the loser’s bracket Sunday with a loss to Huntsville Eastern and was eliminated from the tournament on Monday.
In Saturday’s game, both teams battled to a scoreless tie through four innings of play until the fifth inning where all the runs in the game were scored.
Roanoke scored the first run of the game and grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning, but in the bottom of the fifth, East Brewton scored their two runs of the game to grab a 2-1, one-run lead.
East Brewton kept Roanoke off the board in the top of the sixth inning and did not have to bat as they earned the one-run win in their first ever state tournament appearance.
East Brewton had four hits in the game to Roanoke’s five, but Roanoke committed four errors in the game to East Brewton’s one.
Miles Powell led East Brewton at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Michael Williams was 1-for-3 and Taylor Elliott was 1-for-1 to round out the only four hits for East Brewton in the win.
Tyler Joyner continued his dominance and winning ways on the mound for East Brewton as he went the complete game and allowed one run on five hits, one walk, and struck out nine.
Joyner faced 24 total batters and threw 82 pitches. Of Joyner’s 82 pitches, 60 were strikes and 22 were balls.
Powell and Brad Robinson scored East Brewton’s two runs in the win.
The win advanced East Brewton to Sunday’s game against host Huntsville Eastern who had an opening round bye.
Sunday: Huntsville Eastern 6, East Brewton 3
After picking up a 2-1 win over Roanoke in the first round Saturday, East Brewton dropped into the loser’s bracket with a 6-3 loss to Huntsville Eastern Sunday night in Huntsville.
East Brewton trialed 2-0 after the top of the first inning but scored one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
With the lead cut to one, Huntsville Eastern plated one run in the top of the second inning to grab a 3-1 lead.
East Brewton failed to score in the second inning but scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.
With the game tied, Huntsville Eastern scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead and held East Brewton scoreless the final three innings of the game to claim the 6-3, three-run win.
Miles Powell took the loss on the mound as he went three-plus innings and allowed six runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out three.
Justin Sessions and Rob Jones also pitched in the game as Sessions relieved Powell and Jones relieved Sessions.
Sessions went one-plus innings and allowed no runs, no hits and struck out one and hit one.
Jones went one inning and allowed one hit and struck out two.
Huntsville had nine hits in the win and held East Brewton to only four hits. East Brewton had one error in the loss.
Jones led East Brewton at the plate as he was 1-for-2 with a double and one RBI.
Nick Laster was 1-for-2 and Powell was 1-for-3 with one run scored.
Taylor Elliott was 1-for-3 with one run scored and Michael Williams had an RBI and one run scored in the loss.
East Brewton left six runners on base in the loss to Huntsville.
East Brewton was set to play Mobile Westside Monday night at 6 p.m. in Huntsville.
If they won Monday, they were set to play the winner of the Roanoke/Russellville game.
If East Brewton lost, they would be eliminated from the state tournament.
Monday: Mobile Westside 10, East Brewton 6
In a loser’s bracket game Monday night, with the loser facing elimination from the tournament, East Brewton dropped a 10-6 loss to Mobile Westside to exit the tournament.
East Brewton finished with a 1-2 record in their first ever state tournament appearance.
Mobile grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held the lead until the bottom of the second inning when East Brewton plated five runs to grab a 5-3 lead.
With the lead at two for East Brewton, Mobile then plated five of their own runs to grab an 8-5 lead after five innings of play.
Heading into the final inning of play, Mobile added to their lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 10-5 lead.
Trailing by five runs heading into their last at-bat and needing five runs to tie and six runs to win, East Brewton plated only one run to cut the lead to 10-6 but that was the only run East Brewton would score as their tournament days fell to an end with the four-run loss.
Mobile Westside pounded out 11 hits in the win and held East Brewton to only five.
Powell was 1-for-4 with one run and one RBI and a double.
Joyner was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a double and Nick Laster scored one run in the loss.
Justin Sessions was 1-for-3 with a triple, an RBI and one run scored and Robin Swift had one RBI.
Alex O’Keane was 1-for-3 with one run scored and Taylor Elliott and Brad Robinson both scored runs in the loss.
Rob Jones took the loss on the mound for East Brewton going 3 2/3 innings and allowing six hits, seven runs, four earned runs, two walks and struck out five.
Justin Sessions pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed one runs on three hits and struck out one.
Michael Williams went the final 2/3 of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two.
East Brewton’s 11- and 12-year-old 2009 All Star team was:
