An East Brewton businessman and former mayoral candidate in the town was arrested on drug charges Thursday, authorities said.
John Al Wood of 200 Terry Ave. in East Brewton was arrested by members of the 21st Circuit Judicial Drug Task Force, Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith said.
Wood has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance; two counts of distribution of a controlled substance; and one count of possession of marijuana, second degree.
Wood remained in the Escambia County Detention Center Friday in lieu of bond.
Wood, who previously owned the Cozy Corner restaurant in East Brewton, was a mayoral candidate in the city in 2008.
During his campaign, Wood was indicted on charges of receiving stolen property and impersonating a police officer, charges Wood denied at the time.
Wood, who revealed before election day that he was not actually registered to vote in East Brewton, lost the election to Mayor Terry Clark.
