Mr. James Lloyd Merchant, 76, of Hart Street in East Brewton, died Dec. 29, 2009 in a local hospital after a brief illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Escambia County. He was a member of the East Brewton Assembly of God Church,  was a U.S. Army veteran and was retired from St. Regis paper mill with 40 years of service.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Merchant of East Brewton; one daughter, Jeri McCall of Brewton; one brother, Robert Merchant of Eufaula; three grandchildren, Matthew McCall, Leigh Armstrong, Thomas McCall; two great-grandchildren, Brenden Armstrong and Ashlyn Armstrong.
Funeral services were held Dec. 31, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the East Brewton Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Jeff Scurlock officiating. Burial followed in Union Cemetery with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
