The Brewton Fire Dept. received notice this week that it will be receiving a grant for $82,908 to help it purchase firefighting equipment.
According to Brewton Fire Chief Lawrence Weaver the money will be used to purchase new turnout gear, air packs (self-contained breathing apparatus) and a new compressor system.
The grant, which was announced by Senator Richard Shelby and Representative Jo Bonner, was awarded by the Emergency Preparedness and Repsonse directorate, which includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire Administration. It is part of a $750 million package in direct assistance for firefighters nationwide.
Weaver said the department's current air compressor is 20-years old and needs to be replaced.
