Coming off a 48-35 homecoming win Friday night against Montgomery Catholic, the T.R. Miller Tigers hope for another big win to end the season this Friday night at home against W.S. Neal in the annual Battle of Murder Creek.

T.R. Miller comes into the game against W.S. Neal with a 6-3 record and finished their region schedule with a 5-2 overall record.

T.R. Miller Tiger head coach Jamie Riggs said the Tiger defense from Friday night needs to improve this week.

“We didn’t feel good about what we did defensively obviously Friday,” Riggs said. “We are in the process of trying to correct some of that, but I was proud for us to win the game. We got it done and I think homecoming itself was really great. We had a tremendous crowd and a bunch of people at the pep rally, so it was really fun for those that came. So now we go from homecoming week to getting ready for (W.S.) Neal.”

W.S. Neal comes into Friday’s battle with T.R. Miller with a 0-9 record after losing at Saraland Thursday 27-20.

“They have some good players and it is pretty obvious after watching the film, they have some players that can do some things,” Riggs said. “Our job is to try and get together and play the best game that we have played this year. We obviously need to improve in some areas and do some things better than we did the other night. Hopefully we will do that. That is our goal. Miller-Neal is the same thing to me every year. It is the biggest game on our schedule and it is more important than anything else we do. Everyone may not look at it like that, but I do. So, we are going to give a great effort and try to go out there and prepare and get better and do what we have to do.”

Riggs says he knows W.S. Neal will play their best game they have played all year long Friday night against T.R. Miller.

“I am always amazed that when I watch the video and a guy is not very good,” Riggs said. “On Friday night, we then can’t block him. Some of that happened last year and the year before. It will happen again this year. We need to play the best game that we have played Friday night.

W.S. Neal’s 0-9 record marks the first time since 1999 the Eagles come in to the Battle of Murder Creek without a win. W.S. Neal has been outscored 89-0 in the last two games (55-0 in 2008 and 34-0 in 2009).

“I don’t think it makes a difference,” Riggs said. “None of that matters. It really does not matter to me. It is one game and the only thing that matters is what happens Friday night. What you have done in the past and in the future does not have anything to do with it. You have to get prepared and play in that one game and we are going to do that like we do every year. They are going to do the same thing. They are going to play great and play better than they have played. Obviously if they can beat us, it will go a long way to making their season at the end. It will give them a good feeling at the end.

“If I was in their position, that is what I would be trying to do. So, we are going to do our best to do our part and win the game.”
