City council makes wise investment
The Brewton City Council made an investment in the future at its meeting last Tuesday, an investment that will impact not only city employees, but also our community as a whole. The best part of the deal is that in terms of dollars the investment is going to be minimal, but the payoff ought to be substantial.
The council unanimously approved a resolution presented by the Character Project. In doing so, the council agreed to hold monthly character education training meetings with city employees and department heads. The resolution also declared Brewton a City of Character, meaning among other things that city leaders will, "endeavor to model and encourage positive character traits which are vital to preserving our society, integrity and quality of life."
Each month, a different character trait will be introduced to the community. In all, 49 traits will be promoted through our schools, city government, the business community and in the media. The traits are secular in nature, meaning they focus on "doing the right thing," rather than a particular system of beliefs.
In our view, the council's unanimous vote and show of support for the Character Project was the proper decision. It sends a public message to the community that this is a worthwhile project and gives those involved with introducing the program to Brewton a good point of departure in our community.
