Escambia County Sheriff Grover Smith has announced the Law Enforcement Explorer Post sponsored by the Sheriff's Office has been re-chartered and is in the process of recruiting new members.
The Law Enforcement Explorer Program is a division of the National Boy Scouts of America and is designed for young men and women aged 14 through 20. Its purpose is to bring a character-building, citizenship training, and fitness program to the youth of the area.
Captain Chuck McMullen, the Sheriff's Office Chief Investigator, is one of the Post Advisors. He stated "Career surveys conducted in high schools throughout the country and in this area demonstrate a significant level of student interest in law enforcement and criminal justice."
Clair Sanborn, also a post advisor, stated, "As with many high visibility careers, law enforcement often is viewed as a glamorous profession which is often distorted by the media and Hollywood."
The Sheriff's Explorer Post shows teens that are interested in law enforcement what really happens within the profession.
Members of the post participate in many of the department's functions, including dispatching, community outreach, community service projects, search and rescue operation assistance, and potentially ride-along program participation. They will also get to assist in some of the "boring" aspects of law enforcement, such as report writing and handing out community notification flyers.
Today there are more than 33,000 young men and women participating in Law Enforcement Explorer Posts in over 1,800 agencies across the country. If you or a family member are interested, please encourage them to join the post. The post is divided into two teams. One team meets in Atmore and the other in Brewton. There will be a parents orientation meeting held in Brewton on November 17th at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held in the courtroom at the Brewton City Hall.
