The first couple of minutes did not decide their fate, but it did put the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawks in a hole they never recovered from in Saturday's 92-73 setback to Abraham Baldwin at the Chipola Tournament held in Marianna (Fla.).
Abraham Baldwin began the game with a 10-0 lead and extended its advantage to 43-26 by half-time.
JDCC (3-5) played Abraham Baldwin on near even terms in the second half, but by then the damage had long since been done.
"We made a couple of runs at them, but late in the game we had to resort to fouling and they made their free throws to bump the lead back up," Warhawks coach Allen Gainer said.
In addition to the slow start, three other statistics led to JDCC's downfall. The Warhawks committed 24 turnovers, hit just two of 19 three-point field goal attempts and 17 of 28 free throws.
Junior Coleman led three JDCC players in double digits with 19 points, while Jeff Foster added 16. Greg Dickinson contributed 13.
The Warhawks finished the four-team round robin tournament in third place with a 1-2 record. Chipola won its own event with a 3-0 record after its 115-70 triumph over St. John's River (0-3) Saturday. Abraham Baldwin finished second at 2-1.
The Warhawks are off until December 4 when they travel to Monroeville to face Alabama Southern.
