A search of a Flomaton home Tuesday night turned up marijuana and a new drug that has only been illegal in Alabama for about a year, officers said.

Drug task force agents and Brewton narcotics officers search a home at 2223 Wolf Log Road, Flomaton, and found marijuana and salvia, a substance made from a hallucinogenic leaf.

David Mullally, 34, of Flomaton, and Jesse Simmons, 26, of Century, Fla., were both charged with unlawful possession of marijuana.

Escambia County Chief Deputy Mike Lambert said the salvia seized in the investigation will be sent to the state crime lab for testing.

Alabama legislators made salvia illegal with a bill passed in 2010. The drug — which some call a synthetic marijuana — had been sold legally in stores previously.

Mullally was out on bond after being released after a February search of the same home turned up drugs, agents said. In that case, he was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Agents said they had received a number of complaints about illegal drug activity at the home in the recent past.

Both subjects were booked into the Escambia County Detention Center.
