An Atmore man is in custody charged with attempted murder after another man was found beaten and bleeding on Airport Road in Atmore Saturday night.

Derek Coleman, 21, of Atmore was arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with the attempted murder of a man sheriff’s deputies have not identified.

Escambia County sheriff’s deputies and Atmore police responded Saturday night after receiving a call that a black man was lying in the road and looked injured. When officers arrived, they found him bleeding from severe head trauma and multiple abrasions.

Officers were able to get a brief statement from the victim before he was airlifted to a trauma center in Pensacola, Fla., where he remained in critical condition as of Wednesday.

Investigators with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, Atmore Police Department and Alabama State Troopers and assistance with the Atmore Fire Department investigated.

Coleman he remains in jail on $50,000 bond. The case is still under investigation.
