There are a lot of days fans of the T.R. Miller and W.S. Neal football programs can circle on their calendars each year, besides just the annual Battle of Murder Creek, which pits the two schools' teams against each other on the field. That's one of the fringe benefits of pulling for teams that are consistently successful -- they provide plenty of highlights, plenty of excitement and moments to remember over the course of a season. Such is life in a football-rich environment.
It isn't every year, however, that the hard work of our young athletes results in turning yet another day into an instant classic -- the day on which college football's national signing period begins.
This, however, has been such a year. Five area football stars -- one from TRM and four from WSN -- signed national letters of intent Friday, the first step in taking their football careers to the next level.
TRM's Trent Davidson signed to play at Alabama, WSN's Marcus Folmar signed to play at Louisville, WSN's Alphonso Gross signed to play at West Virginia, WSN's Jeremy Burch signed to play at Waldorf and WSN's Chris Johnson signed to play at Itawamba.
That they are getting a chance to play college football is a testament to these young mens' dedication and hard work. It's also a reflection on their coaches, who should be proud to have produced such fine athletes.
It will be treat for all of us here to watch these athletes as they are given the chance to play ball on a bigger stage. We wish them the best of luck, and congratulate them on what they have already accomplished.
They've done their their community proud.
