East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark declared this year's Fourth of July the "best one yet."
The mayor estimates that the celebration attracted a very large crowd, probably 2,500 people throughout the day.
The day began with a large group of card players participating in a spades tournament in the East Brewton Civic Center. Al Woods and Jason Pancheko were the declared winners at the end of the matches and the players moved on to other games. Bingo started in the afternoon followed by a clashing game of horseshoes around 4 p.m. Al Woods and Jason Pancheko won the horseshoe competition also. The prizes for all of the games were donated by local East Brewton and Brewton businesses.
The City of East Brewton provided hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings for the hungry crowd later in the afternoon and live entertainment took over the outside stage in Fort Crawford Park. Wayne Steele and the group Cheyenne performed, along with local talents to keep the crowd busy until the duck race and the fireworks display.
The city sold between 300 and 350 ducks for the annual duck race and when the little fellows finished the race, Coale Jordan was the top winner with $200. Second place of $100 went to Harrison Horton and third place of $50 went to Dr. Carl McInnish.
Of course the top attraction of the day was the fireworks display at 10 p.m. It was loud and colorful and in the words of the mayor,"the most beautiful fireworks we have had."
It is clear that the annual event is growing each year and getting better.
