Mr. William Yancey Jernigan III, 81, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2004, at a local hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Brewton. He was owner and operator of Peoples Market and Grocery in downtown Brewton until his retirement in 1977. He was a Golden Member of First United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Wood Jernigan, and three brothers, Richard Goff Jernigan, Kenneth Floyd Jernigan and Gordon Earle Jernigan.
He is survived by four children, Ruth Jernigan Parker and Yancey Jernigan IV, both of Brewton, Martha Jernigan Scott of Lanett and Elizabeth Jernigan Rodgers of Auburn; three sisters, Marguerite Jernigan Northcutt of Brewton and Merle Jernigan Callaway and Betty Claire Jernigan, both of Greenville; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. at The First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Daniel officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Craver's Funeral Home directing.
