Children may still be upset by the storm

Even as things settle back down for most of us, children may still have fears or worries related to the destruction Hurricane Ivan created in our community.
If children have developed behaviors that aren't normal for them since the storm, such as fear of being alone, fear of the dark or nightmares, there are steps parents and care-givers can take to reassure them that things are safe.
FEMA provides the following tips for helping children cope with their disaster-related fears:
As Dr. Robert DeFrancisco said shortly after the storm, most children are resilient and deal with crisis as well as or better than adults. For those few who don't, a little understanding and support can go a long way in helping them heal.
