The April meeting of the Coalition for Healthier Escambia County will focus on the need for the establishment of a volunteer Medical Reserve Medical Corps for the county. The program will be presented by Ray Sherer, director of emergency preparedness, Alabama Department of Public Health . The meeting is set for Saturday, April 23, at 7 a.m. at the Atmore Community Hospital.
After the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, thousands of Americans responded by volunteering to help in any way that they could. Many more Americans asked "What can I do to help?" The local Medical Reserve Corps provides a means for volunteers – health professional and others to supplement existing local medical, public health and emergency services across the state of Alabama.
In order to be most effective during emergencies, volunteers must be organized and trained to work in emergency situations. The local Medical Reserve Corps and the Alabama Department of Public Health are coordinating activites to provide that organizational structure and promote appropriate training of medical volunteers for our county.
Anyone who is interested in the emergency preparedness readiness in the field of healthcare needs to be present at this important meeting. If you have questions please call Ruth Harrell at 251- 296-5101.
