T.R. Miller Tiger pitcher Kevin Davis struck out 18 and tossed a complete game one-hit shutout Thursday at home against area opponent Washington County as the Tigers of Brewton won 1-0 over the Bulldogs.
But while the Tigers were dominant on the mound behind Davis, one area they were lacking Thursday in the win was in the hits and runs department.
T.R. Miller had only three hits in the win with Caleb McAnally’s RBI double in the first inning to score Collin Grave being the lone run of the game.
McAnally was 1-for-2 at the plate and Jacob Fillmore and Darby Black had the only other hits for the Tigers.
“We left way to many people on base,” Tiger head coach Jim Hart said. “We get them in scoring position but we get in that rut like we have done before. We let Kevin pitch but we don’t do anything to help him out. We are satisfied to get one run and we were so impatient at the plate today.”
Hart said Washington County’s pitcher was not throwing hard Thursday but he was moving the ball around locating at the plate really well and was changing speeds making his Tiger hitters very impatient at the plate.
“We wanted to jump out there and blow it up against that kind of pitcher but we can’t do it,” Hart said. “You love to see Kevin do good but I would love for us to score him some runs and not depend on him so much. That was big win and a big area win and we need to go over there (Friday) and get another one in the first ballgame and we can be sitting real good in the area. I am real proud of them though. They did what we needed to do, it just wasn’t pretty.”
As for Davis on the mound, of the 25 batters faced, he struck out 18 and allowed one hit and walked two.
Washington County had four players reach base in the game with one reaching third in the sixth inning before Davis struck out the next three batters in order.
“We just played good as a team today and we just need to do the same thing (Friday) when we play them again,” Davis said. “We need to swing the bats. I was just getting my breaking ball over early. I pitched them backwards there for a little while and the second time through, I just kept them off-balanced and just tried to give them a little bit of a different look. I just wanted to attack the strike zone.”
T.R. Miller left six runners on base in the win while improving to 12-4 overall in the win and 3-0 in area play. The Tigers were set to travel to Chatom Friday to play Washington County in a doubleheader. T.R. Miller needed to win at least one game Friday to take the series.
T.R. Miller will be back in action Tuesday at home against W.S. Neal. A JV game will be played at 4 p.m. with the varsity game at 5 p.m.

Tuesday: Flomaton 7, TRM 5
In a battle of two ranked teams Tuesday in Flomaton, the No. 6-ranked Hurricanes in class 2A got the better hand of the No. 2-ranked Tigers in 3A as Flomaton edged out T.R. Miller 7-5.
With the loss, T.R. Miller fell to 11-4.
Flomaton jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Tigers of Brewton in the first inning but the Tigers cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of third. With their lead cut to one, Flomaton added two in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. The Hurricanes added one more in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead, but the Tigers rallied with three in the top of the fifth to once again cut the Flomaton lead to 6-5 heading into the sixth inning.
From there, Flomaton would hold the Tigers scoreless while getting an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to edge out the Tigers by two, 7-5.
Darby Black took the loss on the mound as he went three inning to start the game and allowed five runs, four earned, five hits, struck out six, walked two and hit one.
Tyler Dehoff pitched one inning and allowed one run, two hits, one earned run and hit one.
Jacob Fillmore went the final two innings and allowed one run, none earned, struck out out, and walked three.
At the plate for T.R. Miller, Kevin Davis was 1-for-4 and Caleb McAnally was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a homerun.
Fillmore was 1-for-3 and Kyle Davis was 1-for-2. Black was 1-for-1 at the plate in the loss.
