Castleberry to host Strawberry Festival Saturday

Saturday will mark the 26th Annual Strawberry Festival — at the peak of strawberry season.
The festival will be held downtown Castleberry and organizers say it promises to be a big event with streets closed to make room for arts and crafts booths.
Festival coordinator, Sharon Jones, said the food booths have sold out and it looks as if it will be a good year.
“Last year was bigger than any other since I have been working with it 15 years ago,” Jones said. “There will be a lot of kid’s things this year from dunking booth, a fish pond, pony rides, rock wall and bungee jump. I hope the weather will be good and it should be a good day for us all.”
Several booths will display and sell handmade items with plenty of food items and fresh strawberries available as well.
Jones said the strawberry will take center stage with items such as strawberry funnel cakes, strawberry short cake and strawberry ice cream on the menu for the day.
The festival will begin at 9 a.m. and entertainment will include The Twin Creek Cloggers from Brewton, Big Daddy’s Remedy (Denise Jones Snider) from Bay Minette, Carl Tillery from Evergreen and Perfect Image from Mobile.
The festival is the end result of a year-long plan to celebrate one day in honor of the strawberry, which was once a thriving business in the area, Jones said.
Sponsors for this 2012 Strawberry Festival include Weaver’s Glass, Inc., D.W. McMillan Trust, Craver’s Funeral Home, Cannon’s Carpets, BankTrust and Red Wine Plantation/Will, Drew and Daniel Reed.
