With Frisbees in hand, YMCA Program Director Vivian Layton approached the Brewton City Council Tuesday with a request to use Burnt Corn Creek Park for a Healthy Kids Day event.
Layton said the park would be used to help promote the ideals of the YMCA and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Community initiative.
“We want to do our part to help promote activities for children and their families,” Layton said. “It is our goal to use this event to encourage everyone to become more active.”
The use of the park was approved by the council with an event date of May 19.
Layton said a variety of activities are being planned from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will include plenty of activities for the family.
“We are planning trike races, a fun run and even some kid’s yoga,” Layton said. “In between the planned activities will be opportunities for children and their families to participate in standing activities. We’ll have a bouncer, a water slide, a gardening exhibit and even blow some bubbles.”
Layton said the first 150 children to come to the event will receive a tshirt. There will be no charge for any of the activities.
“We had our first Healthy Kids Day in 1992,” Layton said. “We have always had a good response and are happy to partner with the Healthy Kids, Healthy Community initiative in this event this year.”
