Brewton 12U begins tournament with win over Evergreen, to play in championship game Monday

The 12U Brewton all-stars used the pitching of Russell Smith Friday night to help guide them to an 8-0 win over Evergreen in their first game of the tournament.
Brewton, currently 3-1 in the tournament as of Sunday night, was set to play East Brewton Monday night at 6 p.m. in the tournament championship. Brewton will need to beat East Brewton twice to win the championship. East Brewton defeated Brewton 6-4 Saturday.
Although stats were unavailable as of press time Monday, Brewton came through the losers bracket Sunday as they claimed wins over Opp and Covington County to reach the title game. Brewton defeated Opp 14-10 and Covington County 7-4.
Both East Brewton and Brewton will advance to the state tournament in Demopolis.
Friday: Brewton 8, Evergreen 0
Russell Smith pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 14 Evergreen batters in Brewton’s 8-0 win Friday night to start the tournament. Along with striking out 14, Smith walked four in the win and added a two-run homerun.
Brewton led Evergreen 3-0 after three innings after scoring one run each in the first three innings. Following a three-run fourth inning that increased their lead to 6-0, Brewton added two more runs in the sixth to get the win.
Along with Smith’s two-run homerun at the plate, Brewton was added by Drew Williamson’s solo shot to centerfield to start the game. Williams added another RBI later in the game.
Jason Konsler had a double and two singles and Hayden Atkinson had two singles and one RBI.
Andrew Etheridge and Micah Flores both had a single in the win.
