Full military honors will be held for Staff Sgt. Philip L. Travis in Decatur, Ga., this Saturday, Dec. 17, and funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 19, in Beatrice, Ala.
Travis, 41 and a Brewton native, died in Iraq. He was assigned to the Army National Guard's 148th Forward Support Battalion, 48th Brigade Combat Team, based in Forsyth, Ga. The Department of Defense announced his death last week.
Travis was with two other members of his unit when their truck accidentally turned over, killing all three. The incident is still under investigation and no other details were available.
Travis was a resident of Snellville, Ga., and a former resident of Brewton. His father, James Travis, still resides on Underwood Street.
Travis followed in the footsteps of his father and his older brothers by entering the military. He served in the U.S. Navy, working as a cook. After leaving the military and becoming a civilian fireman, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve, his father said. His only child, a daughter, is 16.
The services in Decatur will take place at the Cathedral of Chapel Hill, 4650 Flat Shoals Parkway at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beatrice.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Jones Funeral Home in Monroeville in charge of arrangements.
