Cardinals, Cubs secure opening-day victories

The Cardinals and Cubs got the 2003 Brewton Little League season off to a successful start with opening day wins on Saturday.
Opening day was highlighted with an opening-day no-hitter tossed by the Cubs' Conner Denton. Strong pitching and lively bats led the Cubs to a 11-0 win.
Cubs 11, Athletics 0
Denton faced 14 batters, striking out eight and walking only one batter in the victory.
Leading the Cubs at the plate were: Randy Davis, 1-for-2 with one run scored and a grand slam; Dan Smith, 1-for-1 with an RBI, a stolen base and one run scored; Terry Taylor, 1-for-2, one RBI and one run scored; Parker Reiss, 1-for-2 and two runs scored; Ben Cooper, 1-for-1 with a stolen base and one run scored; Conner Denton, two runs scored; Louis Miller, one run scored and Hunter Franklin, one run scored.
For the Athletics, Bryant Jernigan got the start on the mound, facing 14 batters and giving up four hits, seven runs, two strikeouts and two walks. Trevor Diercks pitched in relief for the A's, facing 13 batters, giving up only one hit, four runs, five strikeouts and four walks.
Cardinals 12, Braves 10
The Cardinals held off the Braves in a high scoring affair.
Jon Jones recorded the win on the mound for the Cards, pitching three innings, surrendering two hits, nine runs, six strikeouts and nine walks. Cliff Foster pitched in relief, surrendering four runs on one hit, striking out five.
Leaders at the plate for the Cards were: Jones, five stolen bases and two runs scored; Harrison Horton, five stolen bases and two runs scored; Michael McGaha, four stolen bases and one run scored; Cliff Foster, 1-for-2 with a run scored; Collin Graves, 1-for-2 with an RBI, eight stolen bases and one run scored; Kameron Winn, 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and one run scored; Hunter Hanks, 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and one run scored and Austin Graddy with two runs scored.
The Braves opening day pitcher was Tyler Dehoff who gave up seven hits, eight runs and struck out two. Drew Rush pitched in relief, giving up four hits and five runs while striking out three and walking four.
Leaders at the plate for the Braves were: Bradley Brown, one run scored; Drew Rush, two runs scored; Avery Couture, 1-for-1 with two RBIs and a run scored; Dylan Bell, 1-for-1 with three runs scored; Tyler Etheridge, two runs scored and Patrick Weaver, one run scored.
