Derrell Blevins had a dream of becoming a head baseball coach someday - and he made that dream come true when he was hired at Jefferson Davis Community College last year to coach the Warhawks.
Feb. 5 saw Blevins' team hit the field for another season. The team has 37 members on the roster and has already played more than 20 games. Blevins has recruited from among the best of high school players and believes the team will do well this year.
The Warhawks will play 56 games this year - and the team has won more than half of its games so far.
Blevins is not alone in his belief in the team. He is thankful to find the college is behind them all the way. He also expressed a big thanks to the community for their support in the college and in the team.
Blevins was born and raised in Montgomery until he was in the seventh grade. His father worked with Winn-Dixie and was transferred at that time to Decatur. Blevins attended Austin High School and graduated in 1985. He is the older of two boys who grew up hunting, fishing and playing ball. After he graduated from high school he came back to Montgomery and attended Auburn University at Montgomery and worked at his uncle's jewelry store while he was in college. He graduated in 1989 and got a job at Kershaw Manufacturing Company doing railroad maintenance and manufacturing.
He got a chance to do some volunteer coaching at Robert E. Lee High School.
A friend got a job in Dothan, and Blevins went along and got a job teaching at Wallace Community College.
